Risks of Non-Professional Practices: Using Magic Erasers, Activated Charcoal, or Household Cleaning Products

1. Whitening your teeth with a magic eraser or activated charcoal? Alert!

If you’re on social media, you’ve seen it. That person rubbing their teeth with something that looks like a kitchen sponge while saying “it’s the best thing I’ve ever tried to whiten them.” Or the influencer who mixes activated charcoal with coconut oil and proudly smiles while swearing she doesn’t need the dentist anymore.

It seems harmless. Even brilliant.

But behind that white smile on screen, there’s a reality that doesn’t get recorded: scratched teeth, burned gums, chronic sensitivity, lost enamel. And sometimes, damage that can’t be undone.

2. Viral doesn’t always mean safe: the dangerous trend of whitening at home

We live in the era of “do it yourself.” And that’s fine… until your health is at stake.

Today, aesthetics have been confused with health. The logic is simple (but wrong): if it cleans a tough surface, it must also work on teeth. That’s how we’ve ended up seeing magic erasers, baking soda with lemon paste, vinegar, and even household cleaning products used in the mouth.

And let’s be clear, this isn’t an urban myth. This is happening. I myself, as a dentist, have had patients come in asking if “that white eraser they sell at the stationery store” really works, or who tried to remove stains with homemade mixtures they saw on TikTok. Don’t believe us? Here are a few videos.

And that’s when I have to explain everything from scratch, sometimes with a fractured tooth already on the table.

3. What really happens in your mouth when you use these products?

Your teeth are not a dirty mug. Or a tile. Or a stained pan.
They are living, delicate structures that don’t regenerate on their own.

When you apply a product not designed for oral contact:

  • You wear down the enamel, your only protection against cavities, sensitivity, and fractures.
  • You irritate the gums, which respond with inflammation, bleeding, and in some cases, recession.
  • You alter your mouth’s pH and microbiota, which can trigger infections, bad breath, and loss of natural defenses.

And all that without even getting a real aesthetic result. Because —and here’s the truth no one wants to hear— most of these “remedies” don’t whiten. They only scratch, dehydrate, or erode teeth.

4. Activated charcoal isn’t innocent: what they don’t tell you about its abrasive effect

It’s marketed as natural. As miraculous. As an ancestral solution. But activated charcoal, in clinical practice, has no serious evidence supporting its use for teeth whitening.

“I don’t believe activated charcoal produces real whitening. Maybe with constant use and a lot of care it might work in some way, but there is no commercial product that produces the results we achieve in the office.”

Dr. Alejandra Mora

And that’s exactly the problem: constant, uncontrolled use. Because that black powder, even if it comes in eco-friendly packaging and vegan marketing, is highly abrasive. It works like sandpaper.
And when enamel is sanded… there’s no going back.

I’ve seen teeth with grooves, new stains, and chronic sensitivity because of this. And no, no white smile is worth having to eat ice cream in pain for the rest of your life.

5. And magic erasers? The risk you might be overlooking

This trend in particular is perhaps the most absurd… and the most dangerous. The famous “magic eraser” is nothing more than melamine foam, an abrasive material used to clean walls, shoes, or kitchen grease.

Using it on teeth is like using industrial sandpaper on porcelain. And no exaggeration, I’ve treated patients who —literally— came in with enamel scratched by hand.

The result: severe sensitivity, dullness, irregularities on the tooth surface, and in some cases, exposed dentin. In other words, an open door to pain and irreversible loss of dental structure.

And all because someone on TikTok said, “I did it and it worked.”
Worked for what? So the camera doesn’t catch the consequences?

6. Real damage in the office: scratched teeth, burned gums, and lost enamel

This isn’t theory. It’s not an exaggerated warning. It’s clinical reality.

At AM Dental Studio in Zapopan, I have treated:

  • Young people with prematurely worn enamel
  • Patients who thought their tooth was whiter, but it was only dehydrated and dull
  • Cases of receded gums from contact with homemade acids
  • Fractured teeth from fragility caused by repeated use of abrasive substances

And the most frustrating part: many times, it can’t be reversed. Only restored with more complex and costly treatments.

The initial savings turn into a big emotional and financial investment to recover what should never have been damaged.

7. What alternatives are actually safe? Science-based whitening

Yes, there are safe, effective ways with real results to improve the color of your teeth.
And yes, many times they can even be done at home… but under supervision.

The real options are:

  • In-office whitening, with gingival barriers and precise concentrations
  • Supervised at-home whitening, with custom trays and professional gels
  • Professional cleanings that remove stains without damaging enamel
  • A prior diagnosis to determine if whitening is really what you need

Because not every yellow tooth needs whitening. Sometimes you just need a cleaning. Or treatment for a previous lesion. But you’ll only know that if someone who studied your smile for 5 years… tells you so.

8. Unfiltered conclusion: your teeth are not a sponge or a dirty teacup

Your mouth is not just another surface.
Your teeth are not ceramic.
And your oral health shouldn’t be in the hands of a video with background music and color filters.

A beautiful smile is something we all want. But not at any cost. Not with methods that don’t respect your body. Not with products that aren’t designed to be in contact with living tissue.

“There are many trends that can harm you, but few as directly as those that attack your enamel. And enamel, once it’s gone… it doesn’t come back.”

Dr. Alejandra Mora
