15 facts about Invisalign you need to know — told straight up

15 datos sobre invisalign que no sabías.

Asking for “invisible aligners” has become almost as common as asking for whitening. And while Invisalign is a fantastic system, it’s not magic and it’s not a permanent Instagram filter. Here’s —in plain language and with no fine print— the 15 facts every patient (or curious mind) should know before saying “I’m in!”.

1. Invisalign isn’t magic: its success depends on your consistency

The aligners only work if you wear them. Sounds obvious, but more than one patient thinks “a few hours” is enough. The rule is simple: 22 hours a day. If you take them off to chat, work, or “because they bother you,” the plan gets off track and the results get delayed.

2. The “predictability” is high… but never 100%

Invisalign is a digital treatment based on a 3D scan and powerful software. Dr. Alejandra Mora sums it up like this:

“It's a very good digital system, but it’s not 100% predictable.”

A 92–95% accuracy rate is fantastic, but there will always be slight variations that the orthodontist must adjust during check-ups.

3. More hours = better results (22 h a day, seriously)

We insist because it’s the number one question:
“Can I just wear them while I sleep…?”
No. Your teeth need a constant and gentle force. Every hour without the aligner is a step backward. If the time commitment doesn’t fit your lifestyle, you may need to consider another option (or adjust your habits).

4. Some movements require “attachments”

Those little tooth-colored bumps aren’t decoration. They’re called attachments, and they act as grip points so the plastic can push or rotate the tooth properly. They’re not noticeable to the naked eye and are removed at the end of treatment.

5. Rubber bands still exist

Orthodontic elastics aren’t exclusive to braces. Certain movements (bite closure, class correction, etc.) still require those little rubber bands between the upper and lower jaw. They’re discreet, but yes—you’ll have to wear them.

6. The lab is abroad: that’s part of the cost

“It’s an international lab; that’s why it’s more expensive,” emphasizes Dr. Alejandra Mora.
The digital design and fabrication of each set of aligners is done outside of Mexico. Shipping, logistics, and the brand backed by decades of research all come with a cost. That’s what you’re paying for, beyond just the plastic.

7. The adjustments are made by your orthodontist, not the app

The MyInvisalign app is helpful for reminders and tracking, but it does not replace in-person check-ups. The specialist evaluates how your teeth are really moving (not just what the software shows), decides if refinements are needed, and monitors the health of your gums and roots.

8. You can eat anything… but only without your aligners on

The best part? With no metal or wires, you can eat popcorn, apples, dried chiles… whatever you want. The only rule is to take the aligners out first and brush after eating. Eating with them on will stain them, deform them, and trap food and bacteria.

9. Dental hygiene is easier (and mandatory!)

Without brackets, it’s easier to brush and floss. Still, you need discipline: every time you take out your aligners to eat, brush your teeth and rinse your aligners. That way you avoid stains, hidden cavities, and bad breath inside your “little plastic greenhouse.”

10. Losing an aligner is not the end of the world

It happens. They get wrapped in a napkin and end up in the trash. The usual protocol: put in the previous aligner or the next one (depending on what your orthodontist tells you) and notify them —quickly— to request a duplicate. The sooner you report it, the less setback there will be.

11. Not every case is a candidate

There are biomechanical limits. Extreme crowding, very severe rotations, or certain skeletal malocclusions first require fixed orthodontics or even surgery. A proper diagnosis prevents disappointments.

12. The pain is mild and temporary

Every time you start with a new aligner, you’ll feel some pressure. It usually lasts 24–48 hours and goes away with common pain relievers. It’s not comparable to the “wire adjustments” of traditional braces.

13. The “visual whitening”: aligners can make teeth look lighter

The clear plastic holds a thin layer of saliva on the tooth surface. That reflects light and gives the impression of a lighter tooth. It’s not a permanent effect, but many patients notice it and ask if it “whitens.” The answer: no, but it does “improve” the look visually.

14. In the end, you’ll need retainers, just like with braces

Moving teeth is half the movie; the other half is keeping them where they should be. With Invisalign, you’ll end up using Vivera Retainers (or the retainer your orthodontist recommends). At night, indefinitely. Without a retainer, any beautiful smile will shift out of place.

15. Cost vs. support: what you’re really paying for

Besides the plastic and the brand, you’re paying for:

  • A personalized digital plan
  • In-person checkups with a certified orthodontist
  • Refinements if something doesn’t progress 100%
  • Lab warranty in case of manufacturing defects

That support explains why Invisalign costs more than direct-to-consumer knockoffs that come by mail. Safety, follow-up, and oral health don’t come with a discount.
